Flying activities for 8-17/18-03 week end
As our president just underlined it, time to go flying again. Since tomorrow winds are supposed to be East 4-8 mph with decent lift Kim James and I are first going to the training hill in Zionsville to try James double surface and then we will decide if we want to push to Tipton. Problem is that the corn is high on our East West road, Mr. Cruzan's airport is short to static tow in mild winds and wind is cross for the North South road. Any pilot's comment is welcome. Sunday souls be ENE.

Looks like the plans have changed! Kent is apparently available and we are heading back to the beautiful flying spot, Cruzan field. It's an awesome place, hopefully we have better luck this time and get to spend some quality hours looking down on it from cloudbase! Join us if you can!

We should be there around 9:30 to take advantage of the lift in the morning. When or if it dies down, plan is to go to Zionsville to try James's double surface.

Yes I am home and ready to tow. I plan to be there about 9:00 am. Trailer is loaded and I will see you all in the morning.

What a beautiful day, eh? And a gorgeous place!!! Can't wait to get back there again.

The only video I took did NOT get corrupted this time so here it is. It is the first flight of the day and I cut out the part when radios didn't quite work and I had to run a long way while the tension is being pulled.

Looking at Cross Country Skies Soaring Forecasts (XC Skies), I wanted to compare Saturdays weather forecast with what we experienced and look at today's forecast and then just look at the sky to see what I think was happening. Saturday forecast showed cloud base at 4000 to 5000 feet and top of useable lift 3000 to 4000 feet. Same for Sunday. Updraft velocity for Saturday was predicted to be 300 to 400 fpm. Sunday's 400 to 500 fpm. Saturday's B/S ratio 5 to 6 and Sunday's 9 to 10. Quoting XC Skies "The buoyancy to shear (B/S) ratio, a relationship between the strength of thermals and the average winds aloft. Values of 5 and above typically indicates thermals will not be broken by wind shear turbulence." Saturday's clouds, a mix of high cirrus, I think, and cumulus, we found some thermal lift and very buoyant air and I know Kim said he hit some 200+ up air. On my first full tow I released at 750 feet and hit a small bubble, 25 fpm indicated on the vario, as I headed back to the west. Turned a few times in it and gained to 880 ft. Everyone had some extended flights but nothing big. Sunday's sky was full of nice big flat bottomed cumulus clouds all day and no other high clouds at all. So I am thinking Sunday would have been the better day, with the major difference in the forecast being the B/S ratio at 9 to 10 and the increase in updraft velocity.

If you want to check out XC Skies, I think it is a free trial for thirty days. http://www.xcskies.com

Point well taken Kent. It would be nice if you would give us the forecast in terms of lift as we head to each week end. Then we could try to make arrangements to fly on the most promising day.

A couple of things. I had signed up fo xcskies a couple of weeks ago and not all the info is available in the trial version. To get the B/S ratio I'm pretty sure you need to have the full version. Unless that is unavailable for some reason on the mobile version which is what I was using at the time. I think I'm going to upgrade to the full version anyway since it is a very reasonable $30.00 a year. Whatever it takes to get some of us to finally stick!
I did get several nice videos of our flying this last weekend! Seven to be exact, but two of those were taken from the ground with the camera mounted on my hat. I am working on getting them editted down so I can post them on youtube. I did discover that the video editting software that I have is incompatable with MP4, so I am in the process of downloading an MP4 to wmv converter. It will all take a while since I am still on the evil dialup. Not really sure if I should maybe just be looking for some kind of MP4 editting software instead. Any feedback from those that are more tech savvy would be appreciated! I will work on getting Patrick's posted first since he hasn't had one of his posted yet.
