Flying today in Tipton
We all flew today. All three of us. For pictures, ask James, as he celebrated today his 40th year of hang gliding and 2424th flight.
The wind was mostly East 5 to 15 mph, occasionally switching SE and sometimes ENE. So we went to the East-West road near Tipton (N 250 E County Road). It was a little chilly and the conditions somewhat rough to start with. So the expert James took the first flight, towed to 1200 feet thanks to the 12 mph wind: "It is completely smooth" was the verdict, "but there is no lift". It took perhaps an hour as the tow rope was hard to wind up due to a loose belt, so when I took the second flight, the conditions had changed. The wind was 10 to 15, and my tow was a roughty as the wind suddenly switched to SE, and the lift started up. I had an extended flight, released in a thermal, but did not really gain. Kim waited to go, hoping for better conditions for the first flight of the year. So James went again, had a perfect tow, released around 1000 feet and gained another 800. Then the wind became more gusty and switchy as thermals started to build up and pass by. The condition of the tow rig deteriorated too, as it was now completely untangled. Not the top conditions for the first flights of the year. So we went to Zionsville Middle School, where we all know we can learn hang gliding. Thanks to the pile of dirt they piled up on the West end of their soccer field which provides a nice slope facing East. Jim and I had two flights each and Kim got to be airborne too.

Sorry I couldn't join you, guys. I picked up call for the Muncie hospital to help out a coworker who has been on call 24/7 straight for several months now.

I got my trike out of the storage last week and discovered a major black mold problem in my wing. MAJOR!!! So I dealt with that all day long, when multiple spot treatments didn't work I took the sail off and soaked it overnight. And that didn't help either. Any suggestions?

If the weather is right next weekend I'd like to finally test fly my new-to-me U2, but I can only do Sunday. Or Friday. The weekend after (May 3-4) there are some flying festivities taking place at Henson's, and if the weather cooperates I'm planning on making a long weekend out of it (leaving Thursday evening).

Congrats on a good start to the season!!

I will keep an eye on the weather. We also stopped by to say hello to Bob Cruzan. He renewed his invitation. Kent's scooter is at his parents' but he is not sure it is in working condition. My tow rig is untangled and we can use it, but it is probably wiser not to wind up the line between flights because the belt is still loose.
