Flying Sat June 21
We are celebrating this first day of Summer by going flying to Windfall tomorrow. Wind should be N to NW 4-8 mph. James, Kim and I are going. Other pilots, feel free to join us.

The day started with the sky entirely covered with clouds and East winds. Nothing corresponding to any weather forecast. The realistic pessimist among us was fiercely optimistic, despite XCskies not predicting much lift. He said: it is going to be sunny, the wind will turn North and we will get some lift.
And that's what happened... Or should we say: James found lift.
Given the initial conditions, we decided to fly once each, pack and go home, but things turned out differently...
First we had some spectators: passersbies and the owner of the fields on each side, who was friendly and interested. But as Kim said, the sky cleared, the wind turned North and it started to heat. James went first towed to about 1000 feet, came back, did wing overs and 360s in front of the audience and landed straight into an East wind in the corn (voluntarily and without wacking). I went second, towed at about the same height: nothing remarkable. Kim went third did a few 360s in front of the audience too. The James went again, released in a thermal at 1100 ft, found a second thermal he milked as much as possible climbing as fast as 10 feet a minute, on the sunny side of a forming cumulus and had an extended flight. I went again but did not find anything.

Me, fiercely optimistic, go figure! Like Patrick said, not the epic day we are always on the hunt for, but a fun, safe day none the less. The fact that we met several locals and got the chance to schmooze a bit never hurts us or this sport that we all love so much. We also checked out yet another N-S road just a half mile to the West of the Windfall road we've been using. It may be an option once the corn is too high on the present Windfall road (only 2-3 more weeks from the looks of things).
Now, to feed my more pessimistic side since he is feeling left out! Has anyone looked outside today? We almost definitely picked the wrong day this weekend! Though we might have had to fight cloudsuck from the looks of things at my place. Just saying!

With hindsight today could have been a better day than yesterday, but when I looked at XCskies two days ago, the same kind of lift was forecasted. I think with enough pilots, we should fly both days, but we need to get to this critical mass. In 3 weeks, corn will be high. It is good to know we can move 1/2 mile West where the field on the right is planted with soybeans.
